About Belinda McCarthy

I’m a full-time wedding photographer and portrait photographer, based in rural Somerset where I live with my husband, son and two greyhounds in a converted stone barn with sweeping views over to Glastonbury Tor.

My father was a professional photographer and broadcaster, so I’ve been training in photographic art since I was old enough to hold a camera. Nothing enraptures me more than capturing a moment in time; nothing else gives me such an acute sense of the here and now, of how this one second will never be with us again. Composing an image is a life-affirming and awe-inspiring moment.

I’m interested in capturing the everyday as the extraordinary – in diverse fields such as urban degeneration, hidden rural treasures and illustrating people as they have a right to be seen. Everyone is extraordinary, and it’s my job to uncover the uniqueness of every individual I photograph and record it in images.

Outside of photography, I love literature, film, good wine and cheese, illuminating company and great comedy. I’m also fascinated by European architecture and design – Gaudi’s work in Barcelona are some of the most inspiring and beautiful structures I’ve ever seen. My favourite places, if I had to try and name a few, would include Vienna, Rome and the wilds of Yorkshire – all so different, yet all so magnificent.

My work has been featured in the Western Daily Press, the Oxford Mail, BBC Radio Somerset and BBC Online, as well as in international art publications and as part of an exhibition in the Tate Modern, London. I’m a member of the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers and the Society of International Nature and Wildlife Photographers. More importantly than that, I’m a member of the great adventure we call Life.
